At the house of foreigner teachers, we go without some of our favorites. If you are staying with us at the Foundation and would like to share the comforts of home that cannot be found in San Mateo, here are some things to bring when you pack.
Things to bring list:
Chocolate, peanut butter, cheese, tea, honey, magazines, newspapers, jelly bellies, flavored coffee, teas, spices, flea repellent, batteries, wine
Also, we don't ask for money, but people offer it. The amount that has been donated has ranged from Q20 ($3) for taking a hot shower and having a coffee up to Q100 ($13) for a few days stay. This money goes to laundry and gas expenses. Visitors are welcome to check their email, help with dishes and with cooking, and play funny games with us.
You are very welcome to contribute school supplies when you visit. Here is a list of possibilities:
School and school office supplies
Chalkboards/chalkboard paint, chalk, pencils, folders, whiteboards, whiteboard makers, refillable ink for the markers, erasers, photocopy/printer paper (letter and legal size), printer cartridges, computer mice, Spanish keyboards, radio/CD player, bookshelves, teacher's manuals in Spanish for all subjects, literature books in Spanish (example: 30 copies of the Little Prince), Spanish language dictionaries and Spanish-English dictionaries of 100,000 words (ideally, one for each student), duct tape, scotch tape, sticky tack, pushpins, etc.
New School Land Supplies
Building materials like cement, cement blocks, nails, 2x4s, paint, a general donation of money to pay off the new school's land
Sports, Music, Art
Volleyball sets, badminton sets, baseball equipment, trumpets, drums, liras, tambourines, art supplies

Rooms facing street have no private bathrooms. Rooms w/window to the hall have private bathrooms. In summer of 2007, these rooms had two beds, no pillows. Nada mas. This is a new hotel, furniture will probably be added as time passes.
Hotel El Centro Q 25 per person
This is the closest to the foundation with a view of the center of town. It has larger rooms, a little furniture, no private bathrooms. There are TVs in some rooms.
Hotel Ixtateca Q20 per person
There is one bathroom downstairs. It is further from town, but has wonderful proprietors. It is possibly the simplest hotel.
